Students Plan “Soup for the Soul” Cancer Outreach
The Steuben
County United Way recently participated in
“Connect Effect” , a program created by the Steuben County
Community Foundation. “Connect Effect” brings together student
volunteers and Non Profit agencies to do community service projects. The United Way’s
service project is called “Soup for the Soul” . The project is an
outreach to cancer patients that are currently undergoing chemo or radiation
therapy. The United Way
student volunteers (better known as the “Soup Group”) will ask
local restaurants, civic groups and student groups to make different kinds of
soup that they can package and deliver to cancer patients. “Many times
people undergoing cancer treatment are nauseous and it’s very hard for
them to hold food down. Soup is easily digestible and nourishing and is easy
for a patient or caregiver to warm up.” said United Way Director Darci
Gaff. She added “so many families are touched by cancer in some way and
as friends, family or caregivers, we all feel powerless to help. Making soup is
a great way to put our love and good intensions into something tangible and
show that we care.”
The student “Soup Group” has planned and will
implement the program. This will give students a chance to create all aspects
of event planning and also give them an opportunity to give back to their
community. If you would like to get involved or know of someone facing cancer
who would appreciate a soup delivery , please contact the United Way at 665-6196 or at scuw@verizon.net before March 29th
